About the artist
Shoda Koho (circa 1871–1946) was one of the artists involved in Japan’s shin-hanga (“New Prints”) movement in the early 20th century. Strongly influenced by European Impressionism, the movement focused largely on landscapes, women, and nature.
Shoda Koho (circa 1871–1946) was a Japanese artist active in the early 20th-century shin-hanga movement. He studied under Ogata Gekko, learning painting and printmaking techniques, and is known for subjects such as night scenes, lakeshores, and bridges. His works have a tranquil, poetic atmosphere. Shoda’s works were published by Hasegawa and Nishimiya Yosaku; his “Night Scenes” series in particular demonstrates his keen eye for light and shadow and the stillness of night. His works were favored by collectors at the time and continue to command high prices and hold collectible value in the international auction market. Notably, Moonlit Sea sold for more than US$18,000 in 2025, demonstrating the artistic standing and market recognition of his work. Through his distinctive sensibility and skill, Shoda Koho became an important figure who cannot be overlooked in the history of shin-hanga.
