GHOST IN THE PARK
Ghost Park (2017–2022)
Size: 122x152 cm; 4x5 film
Created with a large-format camera, this series depicts more than one hundred animal statues in parks and temples across Taiwan. Over six years, the artist traveled around the island more than twenty times. The work began as a reflection on whether what we see and the images that represent it are real, and seeks to create an illusion that transcends reality. In the dark, the artist uses a self-developed light-painting technique, illuminating each subject with a flashlight during a two-hour exposure. Like a ritual of summoning spirits, the process brings the animal statues to life within the image. Through light, shadow and the distortions created by shifting and tilting the camera’s bellows, the artist reveals the statues’ spirit and gives them a vivid sense of life.
