Artist introduction: Muran “I’ve always been drawing; I simply exchanged the brush I started with for a carving knife.”

Born in Kaohsiung in 1982, Muran graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at Tunghai University and the printmaking program at Taipei National University of the Arts. From lush, secluded forests and quietly blooming plants to comfortable homes and spirited scenes of everyday life, his work ranges widely. Whether making reduction color prints or black-and-white water-based prints, he is concerned with more than appealing forms, colors or finely decorative carving. At its heart, his work expresses a deep understanding of painting, a commitment to it, and a thoughtful cultivation of everyday life and taste.

For him, what he depicts is his own everyday life. A leisurely breakfast, the play of light and shadow outside the window, potted plants on the balcony, and a dash of his own boundless imagination make the best images. With such calm and quiet beauty, Mu Ran uses his carving knife to create small chapters of life as bright and pleasant as winter sunshine. Into every cut and stroke, he pours his appreciation for the idea of “finding fulfillment within oneself and feeling wholly content,” expressing his serene enjoyment of everyday life.

In 2022, to mark the opening of Cartier's new Taipei 101 flagship store, Muran created the reduction print A Ten-Year Promise.

About the artist

Mu Ran

“I've been drawing, changing from the original brush to an engraving knife.”

Born in Kaohsiung in 1982, he graduated from the Department of Fine Arts of Donghai University and the Printmaking Department of the Institute of Styling of Taipei University of the Arts.

The quiet mountains and forests, the quiet blooming flowers and trees, and the comfortable nest of homes and pleasant daily landscapes; whether it is a single edition reproduction of color works, or pure black and white watermark works, it is not just the cute and interesting visual shapes and colors on the surface, or even the rich and colorful and decorative delicate knife method; it is the deep experience and attachment to painting, as well as his own observation and management of life taste that is the true core of his works.

For him: the narrative is his daily life. A leisurely breakfast, light and shadow outside the window, a potted plant on the balcony, and then put in his own sky horse is the best picture, so calm and quiet, Mu Ran carved a small chapter of life as bright and pleasant as the warm sun in winter with a carving knife, and put this "get by yourself, be fast and self-sufficient" interest under its knife and brush, showing that he is comfortable with the state of life.

In 2022, with the opening of the Cartier 101 flagship store, Muran created a single-edition duplicate engraving, The Covenant of the Decade.
