About the artist

Artist | Mr.

Mr. is a Japanese contemporary artist born in 1969. Anime, manga, video games and otaku culture form the core of his visual language. He is also a prominent figure in the Superflat movement championed by Takashi Murakami.

Describing himself as an otaku artist, Mr. often depicts girls with large eyes and brightly colored hair alongside convenience stores, street signs, pixelated patterns and dense text. At first glance, these scenes seem cute, bright and lively, yet they frequently address loneliness, social anxiety, memories of disasters and the unease of younger generations in Japan's consumer and media culture. For him, moe is a way of exploring desire, fantasy and the pressures of reality. His practice spans painting, works on paper, sculpture, installation and moving images.

Artwork | Blue Tomorrow

Blue Tomorrow was created in 2023. Its Japanese title can also suggest an azure or blue-hued tomorrow.

Dominated by vivid blue, the image densely layers anime characters, pixel cats, hearts, arrows, graffiti and Japanese and English words such as Party!!, Ramen and So Sweet! It resembles a simultaneous display of social-media windows, video-game interfaces and urban advertising: visually exuberant, but with almost no room to breathe.

Although the title invokes tomorrow, the image is not simply optimistic. Blue can suggest clarity and hope as well as melancholy. The juxtaposition of cute characters with a background resembling an information overload places the work between anticipation and anxiety. This is a recurring tension in Mr.'s art: a sweet, cartoon-like surface enclosing the uncertainty of contemporary life.

The original is a work on paper in acrylic, screenprint, ballpoint pen and pencil, measuring approximately 71.9 × 56.8 cm. The product shown here is:

Standard Edition, limited to 400 copies

Released for Mr.'s solo exhibition Invoke It and a Flower Shall Blossom at Perrotin, Paris

The exhibition ran from January 20 to March 2, 2024, presenting new paintings, shaped canvases, sculptures and works on paper.

In short, the work goes beyond cuteness: it compresses anime, street graffiti, digital interfaces and urban noise into a single plane, conveying a contemporary mood of looking forward to tomorrow while feeling uneasy about it.
