About the artist
Mr. Clement is my artistic pseudonym as a sculptor and painter.
My work is often inspired by comics and popular culture, but I enjoy playing with paradoxes and frequently approach my narrative sculptures and paintings through the perspective of the Old Masters.
I like finding small, interesting compositional elements in classical art, but I express them more directly, guided by my own minimalist aesthetic and sense of humor. I developed this approach because I felt it could appeal to my primary audience, who grew up surrounded by pop music, fast food, comics, television, and similar forms of visual entertainment.
Discovering recurring themes and hidden meanings in classical artworks has not only given me a new and profound connection with those works, the old masters, and even bygone eras; it has also helped expand my imagination and enrich the stories and personalities of my characters.
I hope my sculptures can convey complex emotions purely through their forms, without relying on captions or titles. Many cartoon characters in my work carry profound meanings—my protagonist LAPIN is a melancholy explorer, sometimes portrayed through dramatized gestures. This technique stems from my study of classical art, such as how a woman’s hand resting on her chest or the tilt of her head can convey a particular emotion in a portrait by Raphael.
I believe that adding a layer of romantic playfulness to storytelling makes my work distinctive. I like the idea of breaking down boundaries between contemporary and classical art and creating paradoxes by giving original artworks new contexts and meanings.
