About the artist
Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was an Austrian Symbolist painter and a founder and leading figure of the Vienna Secession in the late nineteenth century. Known for highly decorative, sensual subjects exploring love and desire, often incorporating gold leaf, he was one of the foremost artists of Art Nouveau.
Golden Phase: Inspired by the brilliant mosaics of Byzantine churches, Klimt made extensive use of real gold leaf, silver leaf, and gold powder in his paintings. His best-known works include The Kiss and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I.
