About the artist

Ito Yuhan (1882–1951) was a renowned Japanese artist known for his contributions to the Shin-hanga movement. Born in Fukuoka, Japan, he initially studied traditional Japanese painting before turning to Western-style oil painting. This training in both Eastern and Western art was crucial to the development of his distinctive artistic style (Ito, 2019).

Itō’s work was deeply influenced by Western Impressionism, particularly Claude Monet. He admired Monet’s use of color and light to capture the essence of a landscape, an influence also evident in Itō’s work. He often depicted natural landscapes, cityscapes, and historic landmarks in vivid colors and a tranquil atmosphere (Kobayashi, 2014).

A defining feature of his art is its combination of traditional Japanese woodblock-printing techniques with elements of Western art. He introduced new techniques and materials, giving his prints richer textures and more vivid layers of color. His prints typically feature vibrant colors and delicate gradations, producing a watercolor-like effect. Particularly important is his frequent omission of the key block’s contour lines: instead, he blends colors without outlines to create a soft, romantic atmosphere. The absence of people from his works further heightens their tranquil, timeless beauty.

Itō’s influence extended beyond his own work. He also mentored many emerging artists, including Ono Bakufu and Matsumoto Shunsuke. Ono later became a renowned printmaker, while Matsumoto became known for his landscapes. Itō’s guidance had a significant influence on their artistic development (Kobayashi, 2014).

In addition, Ito actively promoted international cultural exchange, participating in exhibitions at home and abroad and introducing the appeal of Japanese art to audiences around the world. Through art, he built cultural bridges and fostered mutual understanding, making important contributions to the international recognition and appreciation of Japanese woodblock prints and shin-hanga (Ito, 2019).
