About the artist
Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964) was born in Bologna, Italy, and almost never left his hometown; he attended and later taught at the Bologna Academy of Fine Arts in the 1910s. After serving briefly in the army during World War I, he retired from the hustle and bustle of the city, focusing on indoor still lifes and suburban scenery outside the window.
Morandi is known for subtracting French stills (cans, boxes, stoppers, etc.); he repeatedly places the same objects, pursuing the limits of subtle tones, light and shadow breathing, and spatial tension.
