Title: Weibliches Liebespaar (Female Lovers)
About the work / Year: 1915; type: drawing; medium: gouache and pencil; original dimensions: 32.5 × 49.5 cm
This work depicting a female couple brings the theme of a failed relationship to a climax.
The gouache shows a mature nude woman, disillusioned and perhaps exhausted, lying on a contorted doll.
The doll's expression gives no indication that it understands what has happened; its face resembles that of a puppet.
Schiele’s exploration of dolls as unconscious playmates symbolizes the alienation caused by the causal relationships between people.
