Title:
1989 Compasso d'Oro Lifetime Achievement Award | B&B Italia.
Here, the 'artist' is more accurately the Italian luxury furniture brand B&B Italia rather than an individual. Founded by Piero Ambrogio Busnelli in 1966, it is an important name in modern Italian furniture and sofa design. Its defining strength is the combination of design aesthetics and industrial manufacturing, particularly its influential work in upholstered furniture, molded forms, and polyurethane foam technology.
B&B Italia's strength lies in using industrial technology, rather than relying solely on traditional craftsmanship, to create furniture that is sculptural, futuristic and suited to everyday living. Its collaborations with leading designers often produce objects situated between furniture and contemporary art.
The black background and a single streamlined trail of light on this poster resemble the outline of a sofa, chair, or the edge of an object seen in a darkroom. Rather than depicting furniture directly, it suggests B&B Italia's modern design ethos through smoothness, speed, curves, and a sense of materiality.
The ADI Design Museum commissioned this poster by Francesca Ferrari to honor B&B Italia, recipient of the Compasso d'Oro lifetime achievement award in 1989.

ADI Design Museum: Compasso d'Oro Lifetime Achievement poster series
The ADI Design Museum, officially the ADI Design Museum Compasso d'Oro, is a design museum in Milan, Italy, devoted to the history of Italian design. Its most important holding is the historical collection of the Compasso d'Oro award. Established in 1954, the award is regarded as one of the most significant honors in Italian design.
Unlike a conventional art museum, it exhibits not just artworks but chairs, lighting, home appliances, vehicles, packaging, industrial products, brand design, and other forms of “design that enters everyday life.” Visiting the ADI Design Museum is therefore a way to see how Italy transforms everyday objects into syntheses of aesthetics, technology, and culture.
The museum’s permanent exhibition is called “The Spoon and the City.” Its concept comes from architect Ernesto Nathan Rogers’s famous phrase “from the spoon to the city”: design encompasses everything from a spoon to an entire city. In other words, good design is found not only in boutiques or art museums, but also in the objects, spaces, and ways of living we encounter every day.
The current ADI Design Museum officially opened in Milan in 2021. Its approximately 5,000-square-meter space displays past Compasso d’Oro Award winners and related design archives, and also hosts temporary exhibitions, lectures, and design events.
