THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE ART
Yudai Nishi
1 WORK
Yudai Nishi
Born in 1991 in Aichi Prefecture. In 2014, he graduated from the Illustration Course in the Department of Visual Design, Faculty of Design, Kyoto Seika University. He began his activities while still a student and now lives in Tokyo. Focused on creating his own work, he actively holds solo exhibitions and participates in group exhibitions, while also producing artwork for major clients such as NIKE and adidas.
American animation, street art, and graffiti have nourished many art enthusiasts. Emerging Japanese artist Yudai Nishi, born in the 1990s, became fascinated with graffiti and street art after reading a comprehensive book on graffiti in his third year of junior high school. He went on to develop this interest, drawing on his intuition, everyday observations, and imagination to create many captivating works that invite viewers to see beyond the image.
Yudai Nishi’s signature style is work that “draws in the eye and is intoxicating to look at.” He likes to outline dazzling, colorful forms in black, separating areas of color and heightening their visual impact. He also believes everyone has an intuitive ability, and prefers to leave room for viewers’ interpretations and associations. Most of his works are therefore titled Untitled, preserving an ambiguous sense of déjà vu. “I don’t want to paint an apple as just an apple, or a banana as just a banana. I reconstruct their forms. If I can reconstruct something into a form that feels right, I’ll use it as the subject of a painting,” says Nishi.
Yudai Nishi’s paintings have attracted considerable attention in Japan’s art and fashion worlds. Brands including PARCO, Nike, Adidas, and MOUSSY have invited him to collaborate.
