THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE ART
Steven Harrington
1 WORK
Steven Harrington is an artist and designer from Los Angeles, USA, often associated with psychedelic pop art. His work is instantly recognizable: bold black outlines, vivid colors, cartoon characters, flowers, palm trees, and smiling faces. Together, they evoke a blend of California sunshine, skate culture, street imagery, and vintage animation.
But he does more than make “cute patterns.” Harrington’s works appear lighthearted and humorous on the surface, but beneath that they often address anxiety, the subconscious, balance in life, contemporary pressures, and healing. The Amorepacific Museum of Art in Seoul also notes in its introduction to him that his bright imagery contains reflections on life balance, anxiety, and the subconscious.
One of his most important characters is Mello, featured in this poster. Mello looks like a dog, a rabbit, and something like a gender-neutral cartoon alter ego. Harrington has said he wanted to design a character unrestricted by human appearance, one that people of different ages, ethnicities, and regions could connect with. Mello thus became a vehicle for his explorations of global issues, psychological states, and everyday feelings.
Another recurring character is Lulu, inspired by palm trees. This also suits his Los Angeles background: sunshine, plants, the coast, the streets, and a relaxed feeling, with a hint of urban unease underneath. That contrast—“looking very chill while actually dealing with anxiety”—is part of what makes his work so compelling.
He is also highly active in commercial collaborations, having worked with brands including Nike, UNIQLO, IKEA, Moncler, BAPE, BE@RBRICK, and innisfree. As a result, his work exists across museums, streetwear, sneakers, toys, and lifestyle design, making him a quintessential contemporary cross-disciplinary artist.
STEVEN HARRINGTON: STAY MELLO, held at the Amorepacific Museum of Art in Seoul in 2024, was his first major solo exhibition in South Korea. It featured more than a hundred works, including paintings, prints, installations, sculptures, drawings, video and brand collaborations. The title carries a double meaning: it refers to his character Mello while also suggesting 'stay calm, stay soft.'
Steven Harrington is one of Los Angeles’s leading psychedelic pop artists. Through vivid colors, cartoon characters, and the visual language of California culture, he creates an artistic world that appears cheerful and lighthearted but actually responds to anxiety, the subconscious, and the pressures of contemporary life.
