THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE ART
Man Ray
1 WORK
Man Ray (August 27, 1890–November 18, 1976), born Emmanuel Radnitzky, was an American modernist artist who spent most of his career in Paris, France. Although he never formally participated in the Dada or Surrealist movements, he nevertheless made major contributions to both.
His work appears across many kinds of media, but he preferred to regard himself first as a painter. Man Ray is known for his avant-garde and surrealist photography and was also a highly regarded fashion and portrait photographer. He is further known for his contributions to the development of the photogram, which he called the “Rayograph.”
In 1999, the American magazine ARTnews named Man Ray one of the 25 most influential artists of the 20th century.
