Ivan Rabuzin was a twentieth-century Croatian artist known for naïve art imbued with yearning, atmosphere and sensitivity. In 1972, Louisiana opened an exhibition titled “Naiv Kunst,” featuring 500 works by naive painters from around the world.

Ivan Rabuzin's work has a dreamy, atmospheric and sensitive quality. Other naïve artists use a more expressive formal language, but they share a rejection of conventional perspective and technical correctness.

Naive art emerged in the 19th century as a response to the formal language of academic art and as a continuation of folk-art traditions. Other well-known naive artists include Henri Rousseau and the local artist Hans Scherfig.

This refers to art created by artists or artisans without formal training, usually self-taught and nonprofessional. Such art often shows that its creators lack knowledge of anatomy, familiarity with basic perspective, and other skills associated with formal artistic training. It includes paintings, sculptures, embroidery, patchwork quilts, toys, ship’s figureheads, animal decoys, painted targets, and other objects. The term is often used particularly for objects of this kind made in Europe and North America during the 19th and 20th centuries. This art is generally distinct from “outsider art,” which includes more exaggerated depictions of mental disturbance and work created or collected by people who deliberately avoid the mainstream ideas of orthodox training. It is also generally distinct from “folk art,” which is created according to specific cultural traditions.
