THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE ART
Howard Hodgkin
1 WORK
One of England’s most renowned contemporary painters, Howard Hodgkin (1932–2017) had a profound understanding of the interplay between gesture, color, and ground. Against a wooden support, his brushstrokes often go beyond the picture and extend onto the frame, breaking traditional boundaries. He treated time as a compositional element, and his work attests to his immersion in the intangible realm of thoughts, feelings, and fleeting private moments.
Featuring Late Afternoon (2003), this poster was produced in 2003. The exhibition presented paintings completed between 1999 and 2003 that confront complex emotions surrounding the passage of time, the loss of friends, and reflection.
