Title: Seeing Is Believing : Lee Miller and Friends
Artwork information:
※ Original poster from the United States
Year of artwork: 2023
Artwork dimensions: 24 × 18 inches (61 × 45.7 cm)
About the artwork
Featuring Man Ray's 1930 image of Lee Miller's torso, this poster was produced in 2023 in connection with Seeing Is Believing: Lee Miller and Friends at Gagosian, 976 Madison Avenue, New York.
The exhibition centers on the long and rich relationship between American photographer Lee Miller and British Surrealist painter, collector, and art historian Roland Penrose. It includes works by artists in their circle, including Joseph Cornell, Max Ernst, Dora Maar, Man Ray, Henry Moore, Valentine Penrose, and Pablo Picasso. In this photograph, shadows cast by a curtain fall across the contours of Miller’s body, vividly conveying the bold, innovative spirit of Miller and Man Ray’s collaboration.
About the artist / Man Ray
Man Ray (August 27, 1890–November 18, 1976), born Emmanuel Radnitzky, was an American modernist artist who spent most of his career in Paris, France. Although he never formally participated in the Dada or Surrealist movements, he nevertheless made major contributions to both.
His work appears across many kinds of media, but he preferred to regard himself first as a painter. Man Ray is known for his avant-garde and surrealist photography and was also a highly regarded fashion and portrait photographer. He is further known for his contributions to the development of the photogram, which he called the “Rayograph.”
In 1999, the American magazine ARTnews named Man Ray one of the 25 most influential artists of the 20th century.
