About the artist / Takashi Murakami
Takashi Murakami is a Japanese artist who studied at Tokyo University of the Arts. He founded the Superflat movement, a postmodern artistic style influenced by Japanese animation and manga that focuses on otaku culture and lifestyles. His inspiration comes from numerous eccentric ukiyo-e artists and the animated work Harmagedon, released by Yoshinori Kanada in 1983. He received a BFA, MFA, and PhD from Tokyo University of the Arts.
Takashi Murakami (Japanese, born 1962) is internationally renowned for his playful negotiation of various artistic styles and traditions. His work often combines Nihonga, a 19th-century Japanese painting style, with contemporary manga and Japanese popular culture, grounded in sharp wit. With a keen awareness of art history and contemporary visual culture, Murakami offers a layered critique of consumer practices and contemporary life. He coined the term “Superflat” to describe the cultural critique and aesthetic preferences of his work and other contemporary Japanese art. Murakami is also the founder and president of the art management company Kaikai Kiki Co. Ltd.
