No.59 No.61 No.62 No.63 About the Yushan print:

The selected image portrays a nighttime view of Yushan shaped by snow, ice, and moonlight; printmaking is well suited to conveying the scene's rugged depth.

The Tsou people call Yushan Patungkuonʉ, originally meaning “Mountain of Quartz,” because when snow covers it in winter, the summit glitters from afar with a crystalline light like quartz.

Yushan’s rock strata consist primarily of metamorphic sandstone, containing large quantities of quartz sand grains and slate.

The printmaking technique I use requires spraying water to soften the paper. The water comes from the Chenyoulan River, which originates on Yushan.

The tiny stars scattered across the print are made with quartz powder representing Yushan’s geology; they also evoke cosmic dust.

Using Taiwan’s mountains and Taiwan’s waters, we made a print of the highest peak on an East Asian island. About the creator / Chen Min-Chia I am Chen Min-jia, a photographer.

Born in Taipei, I spent a long period of my life following a rhythm shaped by magazine and advertising shoots. I have a knack for finding simple, natural beauty for MUJI, and I have also captured the radiance of advertising spokespeople and actors in the studio.

A few years ago, I moved to the north coast and built a living experiment with my own hands, code-named “The Work Shed.” Besides returning to the city for work, I now have more opportunities to spend time in the mountains across Taiwan. This change in lifestyle has influenced my creative work.

Faced with a mountain landscape that appears lifeless, I see the mountains and the starry sky as expressions of an existence that has remained unchanged through the ages. Placing myself beneath this eternity reminds me to keep readjusting my perspective, not to be distracted by fleeting worldly concerns, and to fully appreciate the good fortune of this small, brief life.

From a distance, the mountain appears lifeless, but up close it teems with a rich and remarkable diversity of life. The very existence of all things in nature has meaning, and their beauty far surpasses anything human-made. I hope my work can bring the power of nature—both its eternal mysteries and its smallest beauties—into people’s lives.
