About the artist
Born in Hong Kong in 1986 and a graduate of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Kila Cheung is now a highly regarded full-time artist of a new generation. His work consists primarily of paintings and sculptures, with warm, rich colors and a painting style that carries forward the creative spirit of renowned Japanese contemporary artist Yoshitomo Nara. Nara himself is among Kila Cheung's collectors and once made a statement on his personal Twitter account that caused a stir in the art world: “In recent years, many works have appeared that imitate only the superficial aspects of my painting style, but Kila in Hong Kong has inherited the true spirit of my work, not just its surface.”
Kila Cheung has reflected: 'My God! Everything happening in the world makes me feel so powerless. That anxiety, anger and helplessness made me unconsciously hope for a god to rescue me. Only later did I realize how many symbols of divinity appeared in my work. I wondered: if there is a god, why is the world so badly managed? Perhaps it is a young god, as free-spirited and immature as we are. Oh My Young God!' This became the inspiration for his Taipei solo exhibition OH MY YOUNG GOD!
