Title: Still life with Fruit

About the artist / Isabelle Vandeplassche

Belgian-born artist Isabelle Vandeplassche draws inspiration from the sunny side of everyday life, combining colors to create an atmosphere almost like film photography.

Isabelle currently lives in a small fishing village in Portugal, where the colors of the ocean, quaint architecture, and greenery stirred by the breeze permeate her artworks, which she describes as both lively and relaxing.

“My work often has a sense of tranquility, which suits my personality quite well, because I’m definitely an introvert,” she says. “I hope my work brings viewers a sense of calm.”

Talking about dreams

For Isabelle, the creative process usually begins with an unfinished idea, which she nurtures by looking through inspiring photographs, walking in nature, or browsing local secondhand markets: “I focus on the little details—details I see and try to project into my art.” Spending time outdoors and exploring also helps her settle on a color palette. “I love color! I’m always looking for new color combinations. Once I’ve chosen a palette that feels right for the painting, I start sketching,” she says.

Isabelle continually experiments with materials and techniques to keep her artistic language open. 'Art is an important means of self-expression for me. I'm not good at expressing myself in words, so making art is how I translate my thoughts and feelings.'

Recently, she has been working to bring more of herself into her work—making her subjects more personal and profound, and drawing inspiration from translucent dreams.
