About the artist
Nobuyoshi Araki
Born in 1940 in Minowa, Shitaya Ward, Tokyo Prefecture, now Taitō Ward, Tokyo. He is one of today's best-known contemporary artists.
Nobuyoshi Araki has published many shocking nude works on sexual themes, including images of his private life with his wife Yoko, which stunned the photography world and Japanese society at the time. Today, he is affectionately known to the public as “Genius Araki” and is revered in Europe and America as a “Gran Maestro” (great master), enjoying a high international reputation.
Nobuyoshi Araki studied photography at university. After graduating from Chiba University’s Department of Photography and Printing Engineering in 1963, he worked at the Japanese advertising agency Dentsu, where he met his future wife, Japanese essayist Yoko Araki (née Aoki, 1947–1990). After they married in 1971, Araki published Sentimental Journey, a book of photographs he took of his wife during their honeymoon. After Yoko died in 1990, he published Winter Journey, a book of photographs taken of her in her final days.
Since his debut, Nobuyoshi Araki has published more than 350 books, a number that continues to grow each year. He is therefore considered one of the most prolific artists in Japan and the world. His most popular photography publications include Sentimental Journey, Tokyo Lucky Hole, and Shino.
