About the artist
Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara
Born on December 5, 1959, he is known worldwide for his eclectic work and paintings of melancholy, cartoon-like children and animals. After earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in fine arts from Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music, he went to study at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in the late 1980s. Throughout his life, he has drawn inspiration from both Eastern and Western cultures. Yoshitomo Nara’s childhood coincided with Japan’s postwar period, when growing numbers of people were encountering Western popular culture, including comic books, Disney animation, and pop music. This is often seen as an early influence on his work. Although he has consistently said that he does not draw on Japanese manga, his distinctive portraits of large-eyed figures often lead critics to compare the two. Instead, he maintains that pairing innocent children with cynical expressions or incongruous objects, such as sharp blades, elevates his work to a different spiritual plane and prompts reflection on important religious and philosophical questions.
Yoshitomo Nara has many devoted supporters and has held numerous solo exhibitions around the world. A major retrospective staged between 2003 and 2005 traveled to multiple venues. His work is held by many leading art institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the National Museum of Art, Osaka, Japan.
