Title: Weibliches Liebespaar
Artwork details / Year: 1915. Type: drawing. Medium: gouache and pencil. Original dimensions: 32.5 × 49.5 cm.
The work depicting a female couple highlights the thematic climax of a failed relationship. This gouache shows a mature nude woman, disillusioned and perhaps exhausted, lying on a distorted doll. The doll’s expression gives no indication of what has happened: its face is like a puppet’s.
Schiele’s exploration of dolls as unconscious playmates symbolizes the alienation caused by the causal relationships between people.
About the artist / Egon Schiele (June 12, 1890–October 31, 1918) was an Austrian painter and a pupil of Gustav Klimt. A leading Expressionist of the early twentieth century, he is known for intensely expressive depictions of distorted figures and limbs, often in self-portraits. Many of his works are held by the Leopold Museum.
