Artist: Hanna Peterson
Her work is delicately colored and full of distinctive expression, conveying an appreciation for the human body, the textiles that envelop us, and the environments with which we interact. Swedish artist Hanna Peterson says: “Composition is very important to me, including where the focal point is, the angle of the body, and what is included in and excluded from the work.”
The organic textures of fabric and skin are recurring themes in Hannah’s work. When painting, she prefers gouache on raw canvas, but she has recently also experimented with weaving and other textiles, choosing natural materials such as wool, cotton, and linen. “I am fascinated by materials and love the flow and drape of fabric,” she says, continuing, “In addition to architectural functionalism, I am inspired by the Scandinavian textile movement of around the 1960s, especially their analog approach to sketching and the simple beauty of their designs.”
“Another Home”
Hanna grew up in a small town in central Sweden, but over the past few years she has made the coastal city of Gothenburg her home. It was in this city that she became an artist, working day after day in a small studio and workspace shared with friends. Much of the initial inspiration for her work, however, takes shape during her daily walks. “When I go for a walk, I sketch out images in my mind. Afterward, I often make mood boards and place them next to my work—it helps me create an atmosphere that guides me into the creative process.”
Working as an artist blurs the boundaries between personal life and professional inspiration. “It’s very natural, but sometimes you have to handle it carefully—especially when bringing work home. I think it’s important to stop working at the right time so you can keep moving toward your dreams.”
To relax, Hanna enjoys yoga and spends plenty of time outdoors in nature when the sun is out. “My latest interest is an old but lovely sailboat, and this summer I plan to learn how to sail it.”
