Artist: Sofia Lind
Swedish artist Sofia Lind combines soft colors and intuitive patterns to create a universe full of captivating characters.
In her Stockholm studio, Sofia works primarily on paper with gouache and watercolor. She explores how colors work together to enhance her subjects in a calming or enticing way. “I often choose a color I dislike as a starting point and combine it with other colors to keep the process interesting and lively.”
Educated in crafts and design, Sofia also fills her artwork with patterns. She explains: “I’ve worked with patterns and pattern design for a long time. The mathematics and repetitive process of pattern-making suit me very well, and I often try to incorporate patterns into my work.”
Sofia initially studied engineering, but after completing her exams, she knew it was not the right career path for her. “I started studying at the HDK School of Design and Crafts, and it felt like coming home. Everything began to fall into place, and for the first time in years, I felt I had found the right challenge.”
The Art of Creation
Even now, as an established artist, the fear of failure still lingers in Sophia Lind’s mind.
“I make a lot of sketches, but I don’t let my performance anxiety get in the way. I tell myself I’ll throw everything away and show it to no one. That’s the best way for me to start a new project.”
However, this has not slowed her down. Instead, Sofia has thrown herself wholeheartedly into her work, finding inspiration in that drive. It helps her push the creativity of her work forward. “Painting techniques inspire me, while placing my works in a context gives them meaning.”
Engaging with art—whether making it herself or viewing other people's work—is one way Sophia connects with others. It helps her gain perspective on and an understanding of the world around her. Asked how she likes to spend her free time, she mentioned a painting: “Monet has a painting called Breakfast in the Garden. I've always longed to start my Sundays that way: enjoying a hearty breakfast in my garden, preferably with family and friends.”
