Swedish artist Per Wizén (born 1966) is one of the few artists in the contemporary European art world to use collage as his primary creative language while continually exploring image reproduction and the deconstruction of narrative. A graduate of Malmö Art Academy, he has long been active in contemporary art exhibitions across the Nordic countries and Europe. His work was featured in the major solo exhibition Undercurrents at Moderna Museet Malmö in Sweden and is also frequently shown at Cecilia Hillström Gallery in Stockholm.
Wizén’s creative method is rigorous yet deeply poetic. He extracts fragments from art-historical paintings, fairy-tale illustrations, classic comics, and film images, then reassembles them into new compositions through handmade analogue collage. At first glance, these images appear delicate and harmonious, but they are actually composed of countless tiny visual fragments, suggesting complex layers of time and psychological associations. He particularly favors natural imagery such as forests, trees, mist, and shadows. In his work, these elements are no longer mere backgrounds but vehicles for emotion and narrative, symbolizing spaces of the subconscious and places where memory resides.
In Blue Hunt (2022), Wizén continues his fascination with forest landscapes. Three meters wide and assembled from hundreds of blue-toned image fragments, the work appears to depict a tranquil woodland, yet harbors a deeper unease and anticipation. The word “Hunt” in the title suggests a hunting scene, but neither hunter nor prey is visible; only the forest remains. This “absent narrative” draws the viewer’s gaze between light, shadow, and branches, as though awaiting an event about to unfold. The cool blues lend the image solitude and poetry, placing the entire space somewhere between reality and dream.
Wizén’s work is often described as “illusion built through reason.” Through meticulous collage techniques and an exceptionally restrained palette, he gives his images an almost painterly visual continuity while retaining the fragmentation and sense of time inherent in collage. This contradictory tension lends his work both the aesthetic depth of classical art and a contemporary, psychological dimension. Between the familiar and the unfamiliar, memory and dreams, Wizén invites viewers to reconsider the boundaries between “seeing” and “reality.”
Since the 2000s, Per Wizén’s work has been exhibited at major institutions in Sweden and Europe. His important solo exhibitions include Undercurrents (2022), held concurrently at Moderna Museet Malmö and Cecilia Hillström Gallery in Stockholm; Subterranean (2016) and Trespassers (2019), both shown at the same gallery; and the early retrospective Works 1998–2008 at Malmö Art Museum. He also presented Work in Process at Skissernas Museum, the Swedish Museum of Sketches, where he publicly displayed his intricate collage-making process.
Wizén’s work has appeared in numerous international group exhibitions, including Power & Paint (2024–2025) and Notions of Time (2022–2023) in Finland, and Diversity United – Contemporary European Art, which toured Europe. His work is held by several institutions, including Moderna Museet in Sweden, Malmö Art Museum, Borås Art Museum, Public Art Agency Sweden, and international collections such as the Brooklyn Museum of Art, USA.
His artistic achievements have been recognized with several Swedish art awards and grants, including the 2008 Barbro & Holger Bäckström Art Prize, a 2006 grant from Edstrandska Stiftelsen, and scholarships from the Ellen Trotzig and Aase & Richard Björklund foundations. These honors attest to his standing in Swedish contemporary art.
