Artist: Alex Da Corte
Alex Da Corte is an American contemporary artist born in 1980 and based in New York City. His practice spans painting, sculpture, video, installation and performance, often incorporating popular culture and consumer goods. Bright colors, unusual forms and humor distinguish works that are both entertaining and thought-provoking.
Alex Da Corte's work frequently explores consumer culture, identity, emotion, gender and politics. Symbolically charged objects—cakes, cats, shiny materials and supermarket goods—convey his observations and critiques of contemporary society. His work also engages with existing artistic, cultural and historical contexts, bringing contemporary pop songs together with classical music or combining classic films with symbols of American culture.
He has exhibited internationally at Bodega, Gió Marconi, Josh Lilley, Maccarone, the HEART Herning Museum of Contemporary Art, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Institute of Contemporary Art. Da Corte has undertaken numerous collaborations with other visual artists, writers, and musicians, including Jayson Musson, Dev Hynes, Sam McKinniss, and Annie Clark. In February 2021, his work was selected for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Roof Garden collection.
Rubber Pencil Devil is a video installation by Alex Da Corte featuring striking visual effects. From July 14, 2022, to January 8, 2023, the Louisiana Museum exhibited works by Alex Da Corte, including this video installation. It was the largest exhibition of the young artist’s work in Europe to date.
Alex Da Corte works across painting, sculpture, installation and video, often appearing in his own films as characters such as Popeye, Eminem and the Statue of Liberty. Through the interplay of color and visual culture, he transforms space. At the Louisiana Museum, visitors encounter an entirely new, immersive setting with specially designed floors, vividly colored walls, neon lights and distinctive scents, as if entering a parallel universe.
The work contains multiple scenes, one of which is called “Pink Panther.” This scene features pink furniture and a set, including a sofa, a coffee table, a vase, and other objects, all enhanced by special lighting. The scene as a whole creates a fantastical, psychedelic feeling, offering viewers rich visual effects and sensory stimulation.
