About the artist

Artist: Orie Ichihashi

Orie Ichihashi was born on July 7, 1978. After working in a studio, she studied under a photographer and became independent in 2001. She has produced numerous photographs for advertisements, magazines, and artists. She has also worked as a cinematographer on television commercials and films. Her third film, After the Rain, was released in May 2018. Her major photography books include PARIS (PIE BOOKS), Gift, and BEAUTIFUL DAYS (both published by MATOI PUBLISHING). Her photography book TOWN was released in December 2017.

“If you don’t set out to photograph inner beauty, your photographs will be very superficial.”

Orie Ichihashi is an emerging photographer born in Japan in 1978. Since becoming an independent photographer in 2001, she has been continually active in Japanese magazines and advertising, shooting print advertisements for McDonald’s and Uniqlo. Petite in stature, she possesses great inner strength. In 1996, Ichihashi enrolled at Musashino Art University. Three months later, realizing that school was not right for her, she resolutely left and began learning photography at a Tokyo photography studio. Perhaps because of this willingness to change and take on challenges, her work always reflects her unique view of the world.

“Keep both the shooting time and the number of shutter presses as low as possible.”

Orie Ichihashi favors film cameras and habitually develops her own negatives. Her photographs always convey the atmosphere of Japanese cinema; even in a frozen moment, you can still sense the fresh feeling of taking a breath.
