Tomoko Nagai
Japan, 1982
Tomoko Nagai was born in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, in 1982 and graduated from the oil painting department of Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music in 2006. Against backdrops of forests and rooms in the home, Nagai’s works dramatically depict various animals, children, colorful trees, and mushrooms. Each painting is filled with multiple subjects and has a distinctive sense of space, condensing the vitality of a fictional narrative world into intricately overlapping layers of imagery. As the artist uses an expressive approach akin to composing music, colorful materials and brushstrokes form a dreamlike rhythm. Standing before each painting, viewers can sense this melody. It evokes the feeling of being inside the painting as viewers’ own memories and experiences—childhood nostalgia, recollections, and dreams—connect with the worldview presented in each work.
