Artist | Mr.
Mr. is a Japanese contemporary artist born in 1969. Anime, manga, video games and otaku culture form his central visual vocabulary. He is also a leading representative of the Superflat artistic context promoted by Takashi Murakami.
He calls himself an “otaku artist.” His works often feature girls with large eyes and colorful hair, as well as convenience stores, street signs, pixel patterns, and extensive text. At first glance, these scenes are cute, bright, and lively, but beneath the surface they often address loneliness, social anxiety, memories of disaster, and the unease Japan’s younger generation feels amid consumer and media culture. Thus, “moe” is not merely decorative; it is his way of grappling with desire, fantasy, and the pressures of reality. His practice spans painting, works on paper, sculpture, installation, and moving images.
Artwork | Blue Tomorrow
Blue Tomorrow was created in 2023. Its Chinese title can be rendered as either “Blue Tomorrow” or “Azure Tomorrow.”
Dominated by vivid blue, the picture densely layers anime characters, pixel cats, hearts, arrows, graffiti, and Japanese and English words such as “Party!!,” “Ramen,” and “So Sweet!” It feels like having many social-media windows, video-game interfaces, and urban advertisements open at once: visually exuberant, yet with almost no room to breathe.
Notably, although the title includes “tomorrow,” the image is not simply optimistic. Blue can signify clarity and hope, but it also carries a sense of melancholy. The juxtaposition of cute characters with a background resembling an explosion of information leaves the work suspended between anticipation and anxiety. This is a familiar contradiction in Mr.’s work: a sweet, cartoon-like surface envelops the uncertainty of modern life.
The original is a work on paper made with acrylic paint, screen printing, ballpoint pen, and pencil, measuring approximately 71.9 × 56.8 cm; the product you are viewing is:
Lithographic print produced by Perrotin in 2024.
Size: 50 × 68 cm
Standard Edition, limited to 400 copies
Released for Mr.’s solo exhibition “Invoke It and a Flower Shall Blossom” at Perrotin in Paris
The solo exhibition ran from January 20 to March 2, 2024, featuring new paintings, shaped canvases, sculptures, and works on paper.
Simply put, what makes this work most interesting is that it is more than just “cute”: it compresses anime, street graffiti, digital interfaces, and urban noise onto a single plane, conveying a contemporary mood that both looks forward to tomorrow and feels anxious about it.
