Artist: Julie Mehretu
Artist Julie Mehretu (born 1970) is known for her large-scale abstract paintings. Born in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, to an Ethiopian father and an American mother, she moved with her parents to Michigan in the United States in 1977. In 2020, Time magazine named her one of its 100 most influential people. According to available information, her works have achieved total auction sales of approximately US$220 million, making her one of today’s bestselling living women artists. Renowned institutions such as MoMA and the Brooklyn Museum have collected her work since the early 2000s and credit Mehretu with “reinventing abstraction” in the 21st century.
Julie Mehretu's original approach to abstraction, concrete references and aesthetics has attracted considerable attention. She creates works capable of interpreting both history and tangible reality. The multilayered structures of line and color in her paintings and drawings reveal many viewpoints, scales and levels of information, together forming a non-hierarchical cultural geometry.
Disorderly details and patterns come together as a whole, creating stories about architecture, urban planning, nations, and places—as well as the artist’s own life, which is connected to places including Ethiopia, Michigan, Senegal, and Rhode Island.
Julie Mehretu was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 1970 and grew up in the United States. She graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1997 and rose to international prominence within a few years.
