Reference photographs showing the glossy details of this series:

Artist: NATHALIE DU PASQUIER

Du Pasquier is fascinated by the duality of art and architecture. Bold shapes and unexpected color combinations bring out the structures of two- and three-dimensional objects. Initially depicting still lifes and landscapes, her painting has moved away from recognizable objects toward a more exploratory visual language.

Describing herself as “a painter who makes her own models,” she generally favors an instinctive approach. “For me, designing patterns is a way of bringing together states of mind, memories, desires, and so on, without having to be too clever.” — Nathalie du Pasquier, in an interview with Frieze.

Her early success designing textiles through untrained, intuitive talent led Ettore Sottsass to invite her to join Memphis, a design collective founded in Milan that lasted more than ten years and was known for its “form follows fun” ethos. After Memphis disbanded, Nathalie shifted her focus to her pure passion: painting. Her work can be seen as a continuous chain of thought, whether in textiles designed for American Apparel, silk scarves for Hermes, an illustrated book, or a ceramics collaboration with Bitossi. Beyond the people closely connected to the artist’s life, her surroundings also had a strong influence on her: Milan; her hometown of Bordeaux; and travels through West Africa. Her ever-evolving practice is an organic and steady path of interconnected experiences and creations.
