The Empire of Light, II (1950)

In this mysterious and contradictory scene, a quiet street shrouded in the shadows of night lies beneath a bright azure sky. This strange coexistence of day and night transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary; therein lies the power of René Magritte’s The Empire of Light.

Magritte once explained his Surrealist work this way: “I believe the point is not to paint ‘reality’ as I and others can easily see it, but to depict the most ordinary reality so that the reality before us loses its everyday or unsettling qualities and reveals its mysterious side.”

In The Empire of Light, a streetlamp illuminates a suburban street, while a light on the upper floor of a house facing the street brightens the scene further. In the foreground, a rippling puddle reflects these sources of light—the first time Magritte incorporated water into the scene. Meanwhile, a large tree reaches toward the blue sky and white clouds, its dark silhouette cutting across the daylight.

René Magritte

(November 21, 1898–August 15, 1967) was a Belgian Surrealist painter known for works infused with humor and thought-provoking symbols. His paintings challenge viewers' preconceived notions of reality and continue to influence many styles of illustration.
