Artist: Brice Marden
Born in Bronxville, Brice Marden worked between New York City, Tivoli in New York State and Hydra, Greece, developing a distinctive approach apart from his Abstract Expressionist and Minimalist contemporaries. Drawing on personal experience and worldwide travel, his work expresses gestural, organic feeling through the power of color. By the late 1960s, he had earned international recognition for his monochrome panels; in the late 1970s, he began exploring relationships between horizontal and vertical planes. His practice was deeply informed by classical architecture, world religions, ancient history and spirituality. Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1998, Marden is represented in major collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
This poster was created in collaboration with Brice Marden in 2019 for Elevation (2018–19), under the theme “It reminds me of something, but I don’t know what.” It was exhibited at Gagosian, 980 Madison Avenue, New York. The painting belongs to Marden’s ongoing Letter series, in which networks of calligraphic lines and brushstrokes traverse fields of color and tone. The Letter paintings were originally inspired by a poem by the Chinese Song dynasty calligrapher, painter, and poet Huang Tingjian. In these new works, however, Marden experimented with white, green, orange, and vivid yellow—colors he had rarely used before.
