Yayoi Kusama
Yayoi Kusama, regarded as a living icon of Japanese art, was born in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, Japan, and graduated from the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts. She moved to New York City in 1957 and began to emerge as a leading avant-garde artist. She now lives in Tokyo, Japan. She has participated in group exhibitions with other contemporary artists, including Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, and Jasper Johns.
In a 1968 interview, Yayoi Kusama spoke about her interest in nature’s infinite qualities. She described them as “a mysterious energy or feeling that exists within infinity,” “continually emerging and growing, never ceasing.” This description takes tangible form in her immersive work: visitors move through a forest of yellow-and-black polka dots, as though enveloped by it.
Throughout her artistic career, Yayoi Kusama has worked in nearly every medium, repeatedly referencing, recreating, and reimagining the structures and cycles of nature. This all-encompassing work—with six-meter-high vines twisting and intertwining above viewers’ heads—embodies her longstanding affinity with and respect for the natural world.
