Title: Verdant
About the artist / Katy Smail
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Katy Smail found creative inspiration in the rugged beauty of her homeland, an influence that continues to shape her work. Although she crossed the Atlantic to hone her skills as a fashion writer and illustrator in New York, she recalls: “The wild Scottish landscapes, skies, and grass are in my bones and remain the source of my inspiration.”
However, a series of major life changes prompted a profound evolution in Katy’s artistic expression. “Since the pandemic began, I’ve returned to Scotland and become a mother, and I’ve shifted my focus to my fine-art painting practice,” she explains.
Smail's current work centers on large-scale paintings of wildflowers, reflecting her profound respect for natural beauty and commitment to environmental protection. Katy describes the paintings as inspired by nature's gentle power, the magic of the natural world, herbal medicine and a desire to protect wildflower meadows.
Her creative process is deeply intuitive, guided by the colors and energy of the natural world. “I try to move out of my mind and into my feeling body,” she says. In an almost meditative state, Katy’s emotions intertwine with ethereal skies and flower-filled landscapes as she creates freely and intuitively on canvas, wood, or fabric.
Dream World
The vivid colors of Fauvism, the mysticism of Hilma af Klint, and depictions of nature in Georgia O’Keeffe’s work have all deeply influenced Katy, yet she remains committed to following her own artistic path. “I like to respond through my own creative process so that my paintings become worlds of their own,” she says firmly. “Color is very important to me and very therapeutic. Colors are a way for me to create dreamlike worlds; in this alternative reality, they are more an expression of emotion than a literal depiction. I like to use color to bring joy.”
For Katy, painting is more than a creative outlet; it is a means of transcendence, a bridge between the tangible and the ineffable. Her artistic reflections echo with profound ideas: divine feminine energy, the urgent need to protect the natural world, and the healing power of plant medicine—ideas that permeate her very being. Yet in the act of painting, reason gives way to intuition as she moves out of her mind and follows the guidance of her senses.
