Artist: Julie Mehretu
Artist Julie Mehretu (born 1970) is known for her large-scale abstract paintings. Born in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, to an Ethiopian father and an American mother, she moved with her parents to Michigan in the United States in 1977. In 2020, Time magazine named her one of its 100 most influential people. According to available information, her works have achieved total auction sales of approximately US$220 million, making her one of today’s bestselling living women artists. Renowned institutions such as MoMA and the Brooklyn Museum have collected her work since the early 2000s and credit Mehretu with “reinventing abstraction” in the 21st century.

《Among the Multitude XIII》 (2021–2022)
This is one of Mehretu's notable recent etchings (the “Multitude” series includes multiple interpretations).
Creative background and visual layers: Compared with the uninhibited energy of her large-scale oil paintings, Mehretu’s prints demonstrate consummate command of line and printmaking processes. This work is typically made using a combination of printmaking techniques, such as aquatint and hard-ground etching. Fine, sharp, precise geometric lines interweave like a spiderweb across the image, clashing with hazy, smoke-like areas of color.
Meaning of the work: The title “Among the Multitude” carries strong sociological and philosophical implications, echoing Marxist scholar Antonio Negri’s definition of the “multitude.” The work explores the individual’s place within a vast collective. The countless intersecting, overlapping, and even destructive lines resemble the paths of countless individuals moving through contemporary society, flows of information across networks, and the tensions of geopolitics. It looks both like a macroscopic network map of a future city and a microscopic psychological portrait of an individual.
