Artist: Johannes Geppert
Artist Johannes Geppert lives and works in Sydney, Australia. At 20, he moved from Hamburg, Germany, to Australia and has lived there ever since. In addition to his new home, he has lived in Berlin, Montreal, and Vancouver over the past few years.
“Rules are part of life, but they must be balanced so that we can free ourselves from rules that, to me, are abstract.”
His interest in art began at a very young age, and he has always loved the way artworks give a space mood and personality.
“My interest began very early. From the age of 10, I remember sleeping over at friends’ houses and being captivated by their parents’ art. I believe my first instinct to paint as a teenager came from a need to express myself. Soon afterward, I realized it was a great outlet, a way to relax, and a lot of fun. I’ve loved being creative ever since.”
When making art, Johannes primarily uses crayons, charcoal, brushes, and his hands, but he enjoys experimenting with any art tools he has. He draws inspiration from magazines and books, as well as from the ocean, nature, and city streets.
“When I paint or draw, I focus my attention and energy on the present moment. I try not to think too far ahead about the lines or shapes, or the speed and rhythm I want to begin with. That is when I produce my best work.”
