Artist: Jean-Michel Basquiat
Jean-Michel Basquiat was an American artist. He first gained public recognition as a graffiti artist in New York and later became a successful Expressionist artist in the 1980s. Basquiat’s work continues to profoundly influence contemporary artists and commands high prices.
Artwork title: Furious Man
As an icon, myth, and brand, Basquiat has long since transcended the narrow confines of art history to become a ubiquitous global phenomenon. The young Black artist burst onto the scene with a series of heads, figures, and powerful symbols, only to disappear again at the age of 27. Since then, the mythology surrounding his life and work has continued to grow; today, it has a life of its own in popular culture.
Among Basquiat’s explosive and expressive works is a group devoted to heads—primarily oil-stick drawings on paper made between 1981 and 1983—that almost entirely dispense with the symbols and text common in his work. Basquiat kept these works close, and they were largely unknown during his lifetime. These drawings of heads are not studies for paintings or works in other media, but complete, independent artworks, and therefore merit consideration within Basquiat’s artistic practice as a whole.

This tote bag features Jean-Michel Basquiat's cover art for the album Beat Bop and was produced by design brand Rome Pays Off. Released on Basquiat's own Tartown record label, the album's original run of 500 vinyl records has become one of the most valuable releases on the market. The exhibition Basquiat—Unbridled will be the first comprehensive presentation of the artist's depictions of heads, including many works he chose not to show publicly during his lifetime.
