Title: Self-Portrait in orange Jacket
Artwork details / Year: 1913. Type: drawing. Medium: gouache and pencil.
In the self-portrait in an orange jacket, the short robe looks delicate and smooth, almost elegant, while the choice of vivid colors is positively lavish. Yet this refined artist—a spiritual presence—seems somewhat lost in this world. His eyes close wearily, with a sense of melancholy resignation.
In contrast to the quiet, contemplative self-portrait with an orange jacket is the raw, provocative self-portrait of 1914, in which he shows himself wearing a short vest pulled up over his bare torso. With his back to us, he gives us only a fleeting, defiant sideways glance, as if dismissing us. The subtle sense of yielding in the artist’s spiritual presence has now been replaced by a decisive rising up.
About the artist / Egon Schiele (June 12, 1890–October 31, 1918) was an Austrian painter and a pupil of Gustav Klimt. A leading Expressionist of the early twentieth century, he is known for intensely expressive depictions of distorted figures and limbs, often in self-portraits. Many of his works are held by the Leopold Museum.
