Artist: Iwao Yamawaki (1898–1987)
Iwao Yamawaki (1898–1987) was a Japanese photographer and architect. Born Iwao Fujita in Nagasaki, he studied architecture at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and, after graduating, worked as an architect at an architectural firm. He used photography to support his architectural research and traveled to Germany in 1931 to study at the Bauhaus in Dessau. Deeply influenced by the ideas of László Moholy-Nagy, he believed photography could open up new ways of seeing the world beyond the human eye. Yamawaki traveled extensively through Europe and the Soviet Union, documenting modernist architecture and design and capturing student life at the Bauhaus.
This photograph by Iwao Yamawaki brilliantly captures the essence of Bauhaus photographic principles. Everyday objects—two eggs and some string—are captured in light and shadow, revealing their beauty without added decoration. As a gelatin silver print, it realizes László Moholy-Nagy's idea that photography could open up new ways of seeing the world beyond the capabilities of the human eye; the string's shadow forms a striking dark outline.
