Title: More Than I Imagined
About the artist / Louis Buck
Influenced by the ebb and flow of everyday life, British artist Louis Buck incorporates family ties, the natural world, and skateboarding culture into his vibrant abstract creations.
After moving from London to the tranquil Cambridgeshire countryside, Louis Barker underwent a profound change in his outlook on life. Parenthood became a catalyst for his confidence and a source of energy for his artistic career.
By day, he works as a creative designer, using digital media on a tablet to make preliminary sketches and replicate the appearance of physical materials. This provides a basis for gauging the desired effect before he transfers some works to canvas, using materials such as card, pencil, oil pastels, and oil or acrylic paint.
Art and life merge in vibrant expression
Evenings at home are sacred to Louis, a time when art becomes a way to relax and let his creativity flow freely. Driven by impulse and inspired by Abstract Expressionism and the colors of everyday life, his work responds instinctively to the stimuli around him. Family and loved ones often find subtle references to themselves in his creations: shapes inadvertently echo letters or stars drawn by his daughter, while the influence of the skateboard culture of his youth adds another layer of depth.
Although Louis acknowledges the rules and theories governing color, he is eager to break them when intuition calls for it. Whether conveying emotion or adding a touch of discomfort to a work to reflect a mood, color becomes a powerful expressive tool.
