American contemporary artist Roni Horn (born in New York in 1955) is also a writer. She graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design and earned a master’s degree in sculpture from Yale University. Horn works across photography, sculpture, drawing, book publishing, and other media. She emphasizes that “drawing is the foundation of all her work,” regarding it as a central activity for building relationships.
She has long been influenced by Iceland’s extreme landscapes and climate. Traveling there regularly since 1975, she has made Iceland an important “open studio” for her work. Horn’s work often explores identity, gender, the relationship between subject and object, and the fluidity of time and place. Rather than viewing identity as fixed, she emphasizes its capacity for change and its many possible facets. Horn holds an important place in the international art world: she has had retrospectives at major institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art and Tate Modern, and her work is held in numerous prominent collections.
This series consists of facial portraits Horn photographed at geothermal hot springs in Iceland in the mid-1990s. Specifically, You Are the Weather was created between 1994 and 1996 and comprises “around 100” close-up photographs of the same woman's face, taken in water or an environment enveloped by water.
These images do more than document a person. Through water, climate, hot springs, and the momentary changes in a woman as she responds to her surroundings, they reflect on the relationships between “you/me” and “weather,” “environment,” and “identity.” The word “Weather” in the work's title can also be understood as a metaphor for both external surroundings and internal states.
Untitled (Weather) can be seen as a continuation or variation of the series described above: the same woman in similar surroundings, but photographed several years later, conveying the accumulation of time, change, and understanding.
Core ideas of the work
Here, “weather” is not merely a meteorological phenomenon; it becomes a mirror of personal appearance, emotions, and place.
A human face is enveloped by water, steam, and ambient light, creating a viewing experience that feels at once intimate and distant.
Horn disrupts the fixed relationship between subject and viewer: while looking at the face of 'the you,' viewers are reminded that they, too, are part of the weather and the environment.
Through repetition and subtle differences, the series expresses the idea that “change is existence.”
This approach makes Horn's art far more than a presentation of images: it becomes a form of philosophical inquiry into existence, place, time, and our connection with the world.
