About the artist / Hilma af Klint
Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was a Swedish artist regarded as a pioneer of modern abstraction. Her practice included painting, drawing and printmaking, but she is best known for spiritually inspired abstract paintings made between 1906 and 1915, preceding celebrated abstractionists such as Kandinsky and Mondrian.
Hilma af Klint's abstract paintings contain rich symbols, patterns and geometric forms, creating complex layers and structures that convey her deep understanding of nature and the spiritual world. Far ahead of her time, she was not understood by the art establishment of her day; her paintings gained wider attention and recognition only after her death.
In recent years, as women artists and abstract art have been reassessed, Hilma af Klint’s work has received wider attention and acclaim. Her works have also been exhibited in many renowned museums and galleries, becoming one of the treasures of modern art.
