Title: Evolution, No. 15, Group IV, The Seven-pointed Stars
Evolution, No. 15, The Seven-pointed Stars is a work in oil on canvas created in 1908 by Swedish artist Hilma af Klint (1862–1944). She is regarded as one of the earliest artists of the 20th century to pursue pure abstract painting, having begun to produce large numbers of nonrepresentational works as early as 1906.
Why a seven-pointed star?
“7” is very important in this group of works.
Hilma af Klint recorded receiving instructions from her spiritual guides to complete three groups of seven paintings, working at seven-day intervals. The seven-pointed star appears in religious, alchemical and esoteric traditions, often symbolizing cosmic order, completeness and divinity. In Theosophy, it is also connected with ideas such as the Seven Rays.
About the artist / Hilma af Klint
Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was a Swedish artist regarded as a pioneer of modern abstraction. Her practice included painting, drawing and printmaking, but she is best known for spiritually inspired abstract paintings made between 1906 and 1915, preceding celebrated abstractionists such as Kandinsky and Mondrian.
Hilma af Klint's abstract paintings contain rich symbols, patterns and geometric forms, creating complex layers and structures that convey her deep understanding of nature and the spiritual world. Far ahead of her time, she was not understood by the art establishment of her day; her paintings gained wider attention and recognition only after her death.
In recent years, as women artists and abstract art have been reassessed, Hilma af Klint’s work has received wider attention and acclaim. Her works have also been exhibited in many renowned museums and galleries, becoming one of the treasures of modern art.
