Artist: Mayuka Yamamoto
Born in Okayama Prefecture, Japan, in 1964. After completing a master's degree at Musashino Art University in 1990, she studied in Britain as a fellow of Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs, returning to Japan in 1999. From 1993 to 2006, she regularly held solo exhibitions at Tsubaki Gallery in Japan. A later solo exhibition, Deer Boys and Other Children, took place at Canvas International Art in Amsterdam in 2007. Her group exhibitions include the Korea International Art Fair (2004–2007) and Young Japanese Painting (Amsterdam, 2007).
As one of Japan’s leading second-generation contemporary artists, Yamamoto depicts children with animal characteristics and enigmatic expressions in her latest oil paintings, rendering them silent and introspective. The emotions of her child characters, or “animal boys” as she often calls them, remain a mystery to us. They exude an otherworldly calm and composure that conceals their true emotions and psychological states, set against delicate surroundings in soft, muted tones.
