Artwork title: Blue Vase
After more than a decade working in architecture, Portugal-based artist Ana Frois decided to change direction and pursue painting and visual art. She now works as an artist full-time. “I create to record the world as I see it. I am particularly interested in concepts such as ‘reflection’ and ‘symmetry.’”
Her practice centers on themes such as “home,” the passage of time, and transformations in nature. She is adept at observing shapes and structures that are often overlooked, as her prints make clear: they depict everyday household objects as well as fascinating abstract forms. “For me, the most important thing is to pay attention. Simply observe everything around you.”
Ana enjoys working with all kinds of paper, new and old, but is particularly drawn to materials marked by time. 'I love yellowed paper and old books; I'm almost addicted to them,' she laughs. Recently, she began making large works with red thread, 'sewing' images—drawing her subjects with a needle and thread rather than a pencil.
A place where creativity can grow
Ana was born in Coja, a small village in central Portugal's Serra do Açor mountains. Although she no longer lives there, she frequently returns on weekends to visit her family.
During summer vacations, she also returns to the village to create art. Her main workplace, however, is a small studio in Coimbra, which is also her current home. She came upon the studio by chance, but as her practice expanded, it became an extremely important space for Ana. “The studio is just a small room with faded pink walls and pine floors. It is in a quiet, pleasant neighborhood where I can be alone and focus on creating without interruption. Or, when I’m tired, I can walk to a nearby café for a coffee and a short break.”
