About the artist / Rop van Mierlo
Amsterdam-based designer and illustrator Rop studied at Design Academy Eindhoven and graduated in 2008. Working with well-known brands in fashion, culture, and music, Rop creates in a wide range of forms, from paintings to mohair tapestries, hand-tufted rugs, and psychedelic animations. The process, however, usually begins with a drawing or doodle.
Control—or the lack of it—is an important and compelling aspect of his work. The artist often draws inspiration from animals, but his work is more concerned with the process of free-flowing inspiration than with the animals themselves.
Rop's signature wet-on-wet technique applies fluid watercolor to paper or board dampened with a sponge, producing unpredictable results. This uncontrolled process allows each work to find its own form and become a captivating image. In 2020, he launched Wild Animals (W.A.), a product label based on his freely inspired series.
