About the artist / David Shrigley “Art is essentially an optimistic, hopeful thing.”
— David Shrigley
David Shrigley is an internationally celebrated contemporary artist known for direct expression and distinctive dark humor. His work reveals truths that are amusing yet tinged with cruelty. Beneath their seemingly childlike appearance lie precise observations and biting satire of everyday life.
In Shrigley’s dictionary, seriousness is not the opposite of humor; tragedy is. Everyone experiences low points and dark moments, and sometimes, no matter what we do, we cannot change anything. We might as well find the humor in it. “Because a life without a sense of humor is tragic, and the ability to laugh is a luxury everyone can afford,” Shrigley said in an interview. His distinctive dark humor, incomparable wit, and endless surprises were all on display in his major 2012 exhibition “Brain Activity” at London’s Hayward Gallery. The following year, he was nominated for the Turner Prize, one of contemporary art’s most prestigious honors, and one of the principal sculptural works was acquired by Japanese artist Takashi Murakami.

About the artist
David Shrigley
David Shrigley is a world-renowned and critically acclaimed contemporary artist whose work is straightforward and uniquely black humor. From his creation, it can be seen that it is interesting but with a hint of cruel reality, seemingly childish, but in fact, it is the most accurate observation and irony for everyday life.
In Shrigley's dictionary, seriousness is not the opposite of humor, and the opposite of humor is misery. Everyone has low and dark moments, and sometimes no matter what we do, we can't change anything, so it's better to find out its humor. “Because life without a sense of humor is miserable, and the ability to laugh is a luxury that everyone can afford,” Shrigley said in an interview. Exclusive black humor, unparalleled wit, and infinite surprises, he was nominated for the Turner Prize of the Contemporary Art Hall in 2012 for his large-scale exhibition “Brain Activity” at Hayward Gallery in London, and the following year, his main three-dimensional works were also collected by Japanese artist Takashi Murakami.
