Artwork title: The House and the Hills
Artist Anouk van Cleef is dedicated to creating distinctive designs, blending illustration techniques with graphic design to develop her own expressive style. She grew up on a flower farm in the southern Netherlands and still lives in the Netherlands: “I remember always taking my notebook into the fields to draw and write, with only myself and a blank sheet of paper full of possibilities.”
After finishing elementary school, however, Anouk stopped drawing and pursued a career in graphic design. She says that, at the time, she did not know where to begin and did not believe drawing could be a viable path. A few years later, she picked up her brushes again as a creative outlet: “I wanted to bring more emotion to graphic design, a field that can often be rather superficial—it needs more flavor.”
Today, Anouk brings together her talent and knowledge in graphic design and transforms them into a distinctive creative language. “I really love working this way! They complement each other beautifully.”
Overall, Anouk's work centers on embracing everyday life—recognizing that life's little things are what truly matter, and discovering beauty everywhere. “It's a reminder to myself, too,” she says. “I hope viewers feel as though they want to step inside my illustrations and experience a sense of warmth as they look at them.”
Source of Inspiration
Recently, Anouk has drawn inspiration from old British tile patterns, captivated by their use of color and the way their motifs fit perfectly together into symmetrical designs.
“The other day, I rediscovered the work of Dutch artist Maurits Cornelis Escher. I found a book of his art in a secondhand shop, and as I leafed through it, I loved every image.” As with tile patterns, Escher’s attention to detail adds an unexpected playfulness to the finished work.
Unlike Escher, who favored monochrome black and white, Anouk is anything but sparing with color. “I’m actually a little obsessed with color. It can communicate without saying a word. One color palette can make you feel calm, while another can energize you.”
Anouk collects ideas for images and color combinations in everyday life, always carrying an A6 notebook. 'It's full of really ugly, hurried sketches,' she laughs. 'But whenever an idea or image comes to mind, I can write it down immediately so I won't forget.'
